(1810-1891) Барнум, Финиас ТейлорИмпресарио, "отец рекламы", создатель цирка. В юношестве сменил много занятий, от издания аболиционистской [ abolition] газеты до продажи театральных билетов. В возрасте 25 лет встретил на ярмарке старую негритянку, которую выдавали за 160-летнюю няньку Дж. Вашингтона [ Washington, George]. Перекупил ее и создал с ней целый спектакль. В 1841 создал кунсткамеру [Barnum's American Museum], где демонстрировал "русалок с о. Фиджи", бородатых женщин и т.п. Над задрапированным входом в одно из помещений была надпись "ИСХОД" [EGRESS]. Посетители шли в эту дверь валом и... оказывались на улице. Устроил гастроли знаменитой шведской певицы Дженни Линд - "шведского соловья", привез в г. Нью-Йорк первого живого гиппопотама. Выдвинул "теорию" о том, что американцы жаждут "отвлекающего от жизненных проблем" обмана, что в каждом из них живет "олух". В 1881 совместно со своим бывшим конкурентом Бейли [Bailey, James A.] создал цирк [Barnum and Bailey Circus] - "Величайшее представление на земле" ["The greatest show on earth"], в котором артисты выступали на нескольких аренах сразу [ three ring circus]. Через год приобрел огромного слона по имени "Джамбо" ("Гигант") [ Jumbo] и выдавал его за последнего оставшегося в живых мастодонта. Заработал огромные деньги и создал развлечения для миллионов американцев. В 1865 опубликовал откровенную книгу "Пройдохи мира" ["Humbugs of the World"].
